PFAS in Our Water Supply —
What Camas Residents Should Know

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in manufacturing and consumer products for decades. They're called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down naturally in the environment or in the human body.

Elevated PFAS levels have been detected in certain wells in the Camas area. While municipal water treatment addresses many contaminants, private well owners in particular face real exposure risk — and even treated municipal water can carry trace levels that some families prefer to filter out entirely.

Reverse osmosis is one of the most effective filtration methods available for PFAS removal — eliminating up to 95% or more of PFAS compounds, along with a wide range of other contaminants. It's the solution we most frequently recommend when water quality is a concern.

What RO removes

Beyond PFAS

A properly installed RO system addresses a wide range of water quality concerns — not just PFAS.

  • PFAS / PFOA / PFOS forever chemicals
  • Lead and heavy metals
  • Chlorine and chloramines
  • Nitrates and nitrites
  • Arsenic
  • Bacteria and cysts
  • Sediment and turbidity
  • Pharmaceuticals and microplastics

Point-of-Use or Whole House —
Which System Is Right for You?

For drinking & cooking

Point-of-Use System

Installed under the kitchen sink, a point-of-use RO system filters water at a dedicated faucet. This is the most common entry point — highly effective, minimal footprint, and typically the most affordable option. Ideal for families who want clean drinking and cooking water without filtrating every drop that enters the home.

  • Dedicated filtered water tap at the sink
  • Typically 3–5 stage filtration
  • Compact under-sink installation
  • Storage tank for on-demand supply
  • Filter replacement every 6–12 months
  • Great for renters or as a starting point
For every tap in the home

Whole House System

A whole-house system treats water at the point of entry, so every faucet, shower, washing machine, and appliance in your home receives filtered water. This is the right choice for well owners with serious contamination concerns, or households where PFAS exposure through skin contact and inhalation during showering is a priority.

  • Filtration at the main water line
  • Covers all fixtures and appliances
  • Protects water heater and pipes
  • Addresses inhalation & skin exposure
  • Ideal for private well systems
  • Higher upfront cost, broader protection

Already have a system? We install owner-supplied reverse osmosis systems as well — brand agnostic, professionally installed.

Is PFAS actually in our local water? +

Elevated PFAS levels have been detected in certain wells in the Camas area. Private well owners face the most direct exposure risk. If you're on a private well and haven't had your water tested for PFAS, that's a reasonable first step. We can help point you toward testing resources and discuss filtration options based on what you find.

How does reverse osmosis actually work? +

Reverse osmosis forces water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to block contaminants at the molecular level — including PFAS compounds, lead, nitrates, arsenic, and many other substances. The contaminated water is flushed away, while filtered water is stored in a tank or delivered directly to a faucet. Most systems include pre-filters (sediment and carbon) and a post-filter to polish the water before it reaches you.

What's the difference between point-of-use and whole-house RO? +

A point-of-use system filters water at a single tap — typically under the kitchen sink — and is ideal for drinking and cooking. It's the most common and cost-effective starting point. A whole-house system treats all water entering the home at the main supply line, which covers every faucet, shower, and appliance. This is more comprehensive and matters most for well owners or anyone concerned about PFAS exposure through skin contact and showering, not just ingestion.

How often do filters need to be replaced? +

Pre-filters (sediment and carbon) typically need replacement every 6 to 12 months, depending on your water quality and usage. The RO membrane itself usually lasts 2 to 3 years. Post-filters are replaced annually. Halo systems are designed for easy filter access — and we can set you up with a maintenance schedule so you're never thinking about it until it's time.

Does RO water taste different? +

Yes — and most people notice it immediately. RO removes the chlorine, dissolved solids, and other compounds that give tap water its characteristic taste. Many people describe filtered RO water as cleaner, crisper, and closer to bottled water. Some systems include a remineralization stage that adds back a small amount of beneficial minerals for taste and health.

Can you install a system I already own? +

Yes — we install owner-supplied systems without issue. If you've already purchased a point-of-use or whole-house RO system and want it professionally installed, we're happy to handle it. We'll make sure it's set up correctly, connections are solid, and the system is functioning before we leave.

What areas do you serve? +

We serve SW Washington — including Camas, Vancouver, Washougal, Ridgefield, and surrounding areas — and the Portland, OR metro. Free estimates are available within 25 miles of Camas, WA.
