A Rocking Toilet Isn't Just Annoying —
It's a Warning

Most homeowners assume a wobbly toilet is a minor nuisance. It isn't. Every time a loose toilet rocks, it compresses the wax ring unevenly — and over time, that seal breaks down. Once it fails, you've got a silent problem that can quietly damage your subfloor for months before any visible sign appears.

By the time you notice water staining on the ceiling below, or soft spots in the bathroom floor, the damage can be significant. Subfloor repairs around a toilet can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars — all because a relatively simple reset was put off.

The reset itself is usually straightforward: we pull the toilet, replace the wax ring, inspect the flange, and reseat everything properly. It's one of the best investments you can make in your home's long-term health.

What happens when you ignore it

The Chain Reaction a Loose Toilet Starts

  • Rocking compresses wax ring unevenly
  • Wax ring seal degrades or breaks
  • Water seeps under the toilet with every flush
  • Subfloor absorbs moisture over weeks or months
  • Subfloor softens, warps, or rots
  • Flange can crack or sink into damaged floor
  • Sewer gases may enter the home
  • What was a $200 reset becomes a $2,000+ repair

A Running Toilet Is Costing You

The most wasteful toilet problems are often the quietest ones. A worn flapper or faulty fill valve can silently run water into the bowl continuously — you won't hear it, but your water meter will. Older toilets compound the problem: pre-1994 models use 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. Modern high-efficiency toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons. Upgrading one toilet can save 15,000+ gallons per year.

DIY Test

How to Do a Toilet Dye Test

A dye test is the simplest way to find a silent toilet leak. All you need is food coloring or a dye tablet.

  1. Remove the tank lid and set it aside safely
  2. Drop food coloring or a dye tablet into the tank water
  3. Do not flush — wait 15 minutes
  4. Look into the bowl without flushing
  5. If color appears in the bowl, your flapper is leaking
Color in the bowl = silent leak. The flapper isn't sealing properly and water is continuously running from tank to bowl. This is one of the most common — and most fixable — toilet problems we see. A flapper replacement typically takes under 30 minutes.

How We Approach Every Job

01

Diagnose Before We Recommend

A running toilet could be a $12 flapper or something more involved. We'll tell you exactly what's happening before suggesting anything — repair or replace.

02

We Take the Small Jobs Seriously

A loose toilet or a silent leak might seem minor. We know better. The small jobs done right protect you from the expensive ones down the road.

03

Four Generations of Plumbing

Plumbing is a family craft for us. The care and attention to detail that comes from that history shows in every job — even the ones nobody sees.

Curious About Bidets?
We Install Those Too.

If you're already having toilet work done, it's a natural time to consider a bidet seat or standalone bidet. The installation is straightforward, and the long-term benefits — hygiene, comfort, and reduced toilet paper use — are significant.

Bidet seats fit most standard toilets and require a nearby electrical outlet for heated water and seat features. A standalone bidet requires more space and a dedicated plumbing rough-in. We'll help you figure out which option fits your bathroom.

Still on the fence? We wrote a guide for exactly that — covering everything from how they work to why people who switch almost never go back.

Read the Bidet Guide →

Bidet Seat (Most Popular)

Replaces your existing toilet seat. Connects to the existing water supply and a nearby outlet. Heated water, air dryer, and seat warming on most models. No major renovation required — typically installed in under an hour.

Non-Electric Bidet Attachment

Fits between the toilet seat and bowl. Cold water only — no outlet needed. Budget-friendly and easy to install. A good starting point if you're not ready to commit to a full seat.

Smart Toilets — Toto & Kohler

The top of the line. Smart toilets from Toto (Neorest series) and Kohler (Numi series) combine a full-featured integrated bidet with a premium toilet in one seamless unit. Think heated seat, automatic lid, warm air dryer, deodorizer, customizable wash settings, and hands-free flushing — all built in. Requires an electrical outlet and a standard water connection. The closest thing to a spa experience your bathroom can offer.

My toilet rocks a little. Is that really a problem? +

Yes — and it's more urgent than most people think. Even slight rocking puts uneven pressure on the wax ring seal beneath the toilet. Over time that seal breaks down, allowing water to seep under the floor with every flush. By the time you see visible damage, the subfloor may already need significant repair. A toilet reset is a small job that prevents a very large one.

How do I know if my toilet has a silent leak? +

Do a dye test: drop food coloring into the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, your flapper is leaking and water is running continuously from tank to bowl. Silent leaks like this can waste up to 200 gallons per day — and show up as a very real increase on your water bill. The fix is usually inexpensive.

Should I repair or replace my toilet? +

It depends on the age and condition of the toilet. Most repairs — flappers, fill valves, handles, supply lines — are inexpensive and extend toilet life by years. But if your toilet is pre-1994, it's using 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. A modern WaterSense toilet uses 1.28 gpf. At that point, replacement often pays for itself in water savings within a few years. We'll give you an honest comparison at the estimate.

How much water does a running toilet waste? +

A running toilet can waste anywhere from 30 to 200 gallons per day depending on the severity of the leak. That's up to 6,000 gallons per month — easily adding $50 to $150 or more to your monthly water bill. And because it often runs silently, many homeowners don't notice until they get an unusually high bill.

What's involved in a toilet reset? +

We shut off the water supply, disconnect and remove the toilet, inspect the flange for damage, replace the wax ring, and reseat the toilet with new bolts and shims as needed. We then reconnect the supply line, check for leaks, and confirm the toilet is stable. Most resets take 1–2 hours. If the flange is damaged or the subfloor needs attention, we'll let you know before proceeding.

Do you install bidet seats and bidets? +

Yes — bidet seat installation is one of our more popular add-ons when we're already doing toilet work. Most bidet seats install in under an hour and require an existing outlet near the toilet. Standalone bidets require a plumbing rough-in and are best added during a remodel. Read our bidet guide if you're curious where to start.
